I'm here to tell you a TRUTH about accessing TRUE CONFIDENCE!
In fact, here's the biggest problem you face right now…
It's the lack of acceptance and constant rejection of your anxiety and fear.
Why is this a problem?
Because it keeps you divided and fighting against yourself!
Which means you are not able to access confidence as a result of the inner conflict.
And, worst of all, most people dealing with anxiety can't get past the idea
that accomplishing external goals will help them feel secure and confident,
but that only provides a temporary superficial sense of confidence that
depends completely on external validation. As soon as the conditions
change, the insecurity and anxiety come rushing back leaving them feeling
defeated and overwhelmed.
But luckily for you there's a solution to your problem!!
But before we get into that, let me share a quick story with you...
There I was, a clinical psychologist with many years of professional experience under my belt still feeling, insecure and anxious on a regular basis. I was trying to overcome my fear and anxiety by both achieving things and by pushing away my experience of anxiety.
The thing is, at the time I was feeling that although I had tried many methods and techniques to overcome my insecurities I still felt afraid of life and held back from expressing my creativity and aliveness in the world…
The big problem was that I was trying to overcome my anxiety and insecurity by using a false sense of willpower. In other words I was faking confidence by trying to force fear out of my experience. Furthermore, I was looking for sense of security based on my accomplishments. Trying to be confident based on external validation only gave me brief moments of satisfaction that faded pretty quickly, leaving me obsessing about the next accomplishment. Also trying to get rid of my insecurity and anxiety by force only made them stronger. At the end this strategy only increased my anxiety and insecurity fueling negative thoughts and a self loathing attitude.
Then, as if by chance, something amazing happened...
One night, while feeling an overwhelming amount of anxiety and dread something in me gave up trying to get rid of my fear. I turned my attention towards the feelings like never before. I began allowing my experience to be exactly as it was and I became willing to feel whatever I was feeling instead of trying to subtly get rid of my emotions. As I embraced my anxiety, I realized that no matter how intense my feelings were I could actually meet them directly as long as I did not go into the mental narrative. In other words, if i stayed directly in contact with my feelings without the mental story, I could tolerate them and eventually they would pass away. The more I kept turning towards the fear, the more comfortable i became with it. Eventually i found a place of utter confidence. a inner refuge that was not dependent on anything external, but was always available when i turned my attention within. I realized that no matter what happened in my life I could show up for the experience and take on the challenge. I also recognized that I did not need any accomplishments or achievements to have this feeling. This confidence was an innate quality that had been there all along underneath the negative thinking and old wounds from early in life.
That was the game changer in my struggles with insecurity and lack of confidence...
I Understood experientially something I had read and heard many times in my previous exploration and study of spirituality and psychology. It became crystal clear to me that the way to approach any fear or insecurity was not by trying to overcome them, but by embracing them. In time, as a result of this shift in attitude, I continued to connecting more and more with self love, a sense of inner dignity, purpose, and a deep inner sense of confidence that was intrinsic and not dependent on external circumstances.
I made a plan to increase in my life the practices that I new supported this inner sense of solidity. I began balancing awareness practices such as meditation, Nourishing practices such as self compassion, and at the same I began challenging myself to get out of my comfort zone on a regular basis.
This balanced approach to working with myself became increasingly automatic and natural and the experience of inner confidence grew bit by bit. I Found a new level of self trust and being in the present moment became increasingly easier. But it didn’t stop there.
I also began to challenge my self and took more risks in my life.
Bottom line: As a result of my plan of action that integrated regular self care and acceptance as well as challenging myself to get out of my comfort zone on a regular basis, I was able to connect with a deep sense of intrinsic confidence that was not dependent on external factors..
As a result of practicing these principles I can now find support inside myself no matter what is occurring externally. Also have the deep sense of trust and peace inside myself. and when I experience fear or anxiety which are part of being human, it does not hold me back from moving forward in my life. In fact they have became indicators that I am growing because I am living more consistently out of the comfort zone which is were growth happens!
